The Carolina Panthers were one of the NFL’s most disappointing teams last season as they posted a 6-10 record one year after going 15-1 and earning a trip to Super Bowl 50. Cam Newton and Co. will look to get things back on track in 2017.
They signed some reinforcements in free agency to bolster the roster for that bounce-back bid. Julius Peppers, Captain Munnerlyn, Mike Adams and Matt Kalil headlined the group of additions, which should help the team return to its preferred physical style of play.
The Panthers will hope those pickups combined with improved play by those who underachieved last year, led by Newton, results in a quick return to the playoffs – Panthers Game
The Panthers’ road schedule is favorable. That should put them on track to go at least 4-4 away from home, which is basically the baseline for success. Anything less and they would be banking on a dominant season at home.
So, in terms of the playoffs, the most important games will likely be the home games against NFC opponents. In this case, there aren’t any easy ones. None of the six would fall in the gimme category, at least at this stage. Injuries could always change the outlook down the line.
OddsShark notes the Panthers rank in a tie for seventh in terms of odds to win the NFC title. Being on the borderline makes those games against the likes of the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles critical.
That said, it starts with taking care of business within the division. Carolina went 1-2 at home against NFC South opponents last season. Getting that mark to at least 2-1, and preferably 3-0, would give it a much better chance of reaching the postseason.
